It’s enough to make a fashionista’s pedicured toes curl with glee. Screen adaptations of stylish novels are crowding the cinematic catwalk, ready to step into the $106 million-earning high heels of last year’s fashion-mag romance How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, based on Jeannie Long and Michele Alexander’s book. Twentieth Century Fox just optioned Kathleen Tessaro’s Elegance, about a woman who uses a style manual to change her life, while Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling The Devil Wears Prada (loosely based on her experiences as a Vogue assistant) is in the script-writing stages. Finally, Jennifer Weiner’s In Her Shoes about a glam twentysomething and her frumpy, yet shoe-obsessed sisteris shooting in L.A., with 8 Mile’s Curtis Hanson directing and Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette as the sibs.
”My colleagues and I are quite into clothes and shoes, so it was fun for us to read these books,” says Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler, who greenlit Prada and Shoes. ”There’s a very, very vast and strong female audience that’s always looking for quality movies.”
In any case, the fashionable tomes’ authors aren’t necessarily planning on going Hollywood themselves. ”I’m absolutely minimally involved in this…I’m just kinda filled in as a courtesy,” says Weisberger, who scored a reported $600,000 for the rights to Prada but isn’t penning a word of the screenplay. ”It’s been good that way. If the movie’s great, fantastic. And if it’s not, it’s not my fault.”
