Just because the divas on tour this spring get plenty sweaty in their onstage ensembles doesn’t mean the outfits are any less couture. Designer Roberto Cavalli created the aquamarine confection Britney Spears wears during the most dramatic moment of her Onyx Hotel Tour (not counting the simulated copulation with her checkerboard-haired backup dancer): Raised over the stage, Miss Spears croons while dancers twirl on her 80-yard-long skirt. ”For Britney, I imagined a modern Tinker Bell in a romantic and fairytale-style chiffon dress,” says Cavalli, who used Swarovski crystals on the corset and hand-dyed the gown’s fabric.
Dolce & Gabbana’s Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana – who designed Missy Elliott’s and Beyonce’s looks for their Ladies First Tour – were equally attentive to diva detail. ”There’s a lot of color, embellishment, and sensuality in Beyonce’s wardrobe,” says the pair. ”For Missy, we went more graphic, using black, white, and silver only. She looks so fabulous!” Fabulousness aside, the designers have one other concern for concert fashion: ”All the costumes are made in double copies and have modifications for easy and fast access,” says Cavalli. The checkerboard guy must appreciate that.
