Like Toad the Wet Sprocket, with whom they share a hometown (Santa Barbara) and a producer (Gavin MacKillop), Sugarcult play wistful alt-rock with killer three-part vocal harmonies. Unlike their 1990s forebears, Sugarcult have also paid their punk dues on the Warped Tour. On Palm Trees, it’s a hit-and-miss combination: Upbeat sing-alongs like ”Memory” succeed in raising the roof, but the despondent ballads threaten to break up the party.
