Gillian Anderson, The X-Files

(The X-Files: Merrick Morton)

With David Duchovny MIA after a royalties lawsuit and Gillian Anderson ready to bolt upon fulfilling her contract, creator Chris Carter passed the extraterrestrial torch to Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish in a last-ditch effort to save his show. But the new pairing never took. The X-Files: The Complete Ninth Season contains worthy episodes (”Daemonicus,” ”4-D,” ”Release”) that got overshadowed by ludicrous conspiracy plots (More Super Soldiers? Yawn) and bizarre sentimental dips (a ”Brady Bunch”-obsessed telekinetic finds his own family). The series ended just where fans knew it would (with Scully back in Mulder’s arms). But by the time we finally get to ”The Truth,” we’re ready to bid these agents adieu.

EXTRAS Comprehensive but uneven, with laconic commentaries by director Kim Manners and various producers, extensive profiles of the characters we care least about (Gish’s Reyes and Cary Elwes’ Follmer), and just-competent making-of featurettes. Two documentaries (‘95 and ‘96) only serve as reminders of how great the series once was.
