For perhaps the first time, Samantha Jones has turned down more ”Sex.” Variety reports that HBO has scrapped plans to make a theatrical feature film version of ”Sex and the City” because Kim Cattrall wouldn’t commit to the project. The movie, which had been in the works since just before the TV series wrapped in February, would have reunited the four stars of the show and marked the feature directing debut of ”Sex” producer Michael Patrick King. Rather than proceed without Cattrall, HBO pulled the plug on the movie. ”We’ve had six wonderful years with the show and we’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished,” the network said in a statement.
Why did Cattrall say no? Variety cites sources saying that Cattrall wanted script approval, which none of the other actresses had (King was to have written the screenplay as well), and that she also wanted to be paid the same as Sarah Jessica Parker, who, as the lead actress, was to have earned more than the other three. Cattrall’s rep, however, says the actress was too busy to sign on to a project with an unfinished screenplay and an indefinite schedule. ”Kim felt fortunate to have enjoyed six wonderful years, both personally and professionally, playing Samantha on ‘Sex and the City,”’ Cattrall spokeswoman Marvet Britto told Variety. ”She would have loved to have done the movie and made a deal to do the movie, but waited as long as possible with no script or start date and felt she had to take other offers that were presented to her after the hold period had passed. Kim would of course love to do the film and would be happy to revisit the project in the future.”
Earlier this month, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Cattrall signed on to star in ”Ice Princess,” a drama currently shooting in Toronto, in which she plays a former Olympic skating hopeful who coaches a young prospect (”Buffy”’s Michelle Trachtenberg). As for the ”Sex” movie, it’s too bad HBO didn’t want to replace Cattrall because, after seeing Christina Aguilera’s dead-on Cattrall imitation on ”Saturday Night Live” a few months back, we think she’d make a swell substitute Samantha.
