What star would you like to see have his or her own series?
What film actor or actress would you most like to see as the star of his or her own series, à la Gary Sinise’s move from the big screen to TV for CSI: NY? — Adria Dobkin
Adria, you’ve stumbled onto my favorite pastime: playing casting director. There are plenty of underused actresses who’d be welcome headliners on a smart drama: Joan Allen, Laura Dern, and the delightful villainess from The Last Seduction, Linda Fiorentino. But if forced to pick just one new TV star, I’d push for Brendan Fraser. His recurring role on Scrubs as the leukemia-battling brother-in-law of Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) was a sweet reminder that the star of the Mummy franchise can do more than tussle with CGI ghoulies. Fraser’s spotless comedic timing and inherent likability led to a wonderfully rounded character (his final appearance last season was the most heartfelt Scrubs ever). I’d pair him with an equally gifted actress — say Mrs. Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor. They could star in a romantic comedy, with a twist: Unlike on most network sitcoms, these spouses would actually like each other.
