Spike Lee has a lot to say. The problem: No one tells him not to say it all in one outsize allegory. Even Jim Brown, the world’s most intimidating presence, admits: ”I do whatever Spike says.” In She Hate Me, Spike tackles corporate greed, whistle-blowers, lesbians having children, selling sperm to lesbians having children, the Mob, the best nickname in sports, and Monica Bellucci. He’s in love with his ideas, and paints them with considerable style. That is, until he encounters one that doesn’t fit (a wince-inducing Watergate break-in sequence, for instance), at which point he tries to layer colors over it until it does. The result, though clearly flawed, is always watchable.
