Is Will Smith a romantic leading man? We’ll see this weekend, as his first romantic comedy, Hitch, opens in over 3,500 theaters just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Hitch, in which Smith plays a matchmaker who acts on his own advice, is the rare example of its genre that seems to be attracting audiences of all ages and, most impressively, both genders. You can credit gorgeous costar Eva Mendes for some of that, but the high tracking figures among men also prove that Smith is the kind of star men don’t have to feel guilty about wanting to see in a movie like this. Thanks to all of that and its massive theater count (and utter lack of competition), expect Hitch to be THE date movie of the weekend, grossing $30 million.

Second place will likely go to the weekend’s other new wide release, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, which will attract families to the tune of about $10 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s top film, Boogeyman, should see a 60 percent drop to $8 million, followed by The Wedding Date and Are We There Yet?, which will each fall 40 percent to $7 million and $6 million, respectively. Whatever the order, everyone else will be eating Will’s dust.
