The Bones

Genre: Fiction; Author: Seth Greenland; Publisher: Bloomsbury

Greenland’s terrific first novel explores the midlife crisis of Frank Bones, a brilliant but self-destructive comedian who lives with a surgically enhanced B actress named Honey, cheats on her with a waitress named Candi, smokes crack, and calls everyone ”babe.” In his late 40s, he’s been offered what is probably his last shot at career security: the lead in a schlocky sitcom about an Eskimo. Meanwhile, Lloyd Melnick, a vastly over-paid TV writer, faces a different kind of midlife crisis: He wants to ditch his cushy life-style and produce some raw, original art. The plot takes a nosedive in the last third, but this smart TV-biz satire delivers not just laughs, but some real emotional insight into its diverse, vividly drawn characters.
