As recently as the Screen Actors Guild Awards last month and the Golden Globes in January, Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen posed for pictures holding hands on the red carpet and appeared to be a happy Hollywood couple. Not so apparently. On Wednesday, Richards filed for divorce from her husband of nearly three years in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. She also sought spousal support payments and custody of the couple’s children: daughter Sam, whose first birthday is next week, and the unborn child that the six-months-pregnant actress is carrying.
It was the first marriage for Richards, 34, and the second for Sheen, 39, who was married to model Donna Peele for about a year in 1995-96. (Sheen also has a grown daughter, Cassandra, from a previous relationship.) The actors met on the set of the straight-to-video film Good Advice in 2000 and began dating when she appeared as a guest star on Spin City the following year. They married in June 2002 at the home of Spin City producer Gary David Goldberg. Since then, Richards has also guest-starred on Sheen’s current hit sitcom Two and a Half Men and had a cameo as Sheen’s wife in 2003’s Scary Movie 3.
The actor’s marriage to the former Bond girl was widely seen as proof that Sheen had finally put behind him his wild, playboy past. It’s not clear what led to the current split; Richards’ agent, Chuck James, issued a terse statement whose only comment on the filing was: ”Out of respect for all the parties involved, this is a private matter.”
