Why Jason Bateman won a 2005 EW.com Award
FOR Arrested Development
WHY? What more do you people want? Bateman’s Fox sitcom has earned the near-unanimous acclaim of TV critics, it picked up five Emmys during its first season (including Outstanding Comedy Series), and it airs right after The Simpsons. Yet for all the hosannas, its ratings are up only a hair over last year’s, with the show averaging a mere 6.4 million viewers per week. About the only subtle aspect of Arrested Development’s pleas for attention has been the work of Bateman, whose exasperated Michael Bluth is the sensible and rational eye of the storm in the hilariously spoiled and eccentric Bluth family. Maybe if viewers (and Globe voters) show him some love, Michael can get out of the frozen banana business.
