No helicopters or 60,000 pink roses: The wedding of Survivor/Amazing Race sweethearts Amber Brkich and Rob Mariano — an April 16 beach ceremony in the Bahamas that was filmed for a May 24 CBS special — was the anti-Trista Rehn/Ryan Sutter 2003 Bachelorette blowout. But only in theme. The sweeps event was, as Colin Cowie (who planned it with ”Romber” in a mere 30 days) calls it, ”a race to the altar.” He spills the details.
”It was beach chic, but it didn’t forsake elegance,” says Cowie. ”Think I’d serve something in a plastic cup? No, no, no, honey. Please.” Hey, since CBS helped pick up the tab, why not splurge?
DRESSED TO CHILL
Brkich designed her off-white dress and went barefoot. Rehn opted for a $100,000 Badgley Mischka gown and heels hailed as ”the most expensive bridal shoes ever!”
SHE’S THE BOSS
Sutter’s input was marginal. Not Mariano’s, says Cowie. The most heated debate? ”Rob wanted round tables; Amber and I wanted long.” Brkich prevailed. Mariano’s desired sausage and peppers were served…at a pre-wedding barbecue.
The gift bags at the Rehn/Sutter event collectively totaled $30,000, but the Amazing Racers didn’t spring for such extras. ”You give out gift bags at charity events, with free hair products inside,” Cowie says. Because, Romber, a televised proposal and engagement and a wedding that involves a network contract isn’t about what you can get for free…right?
