Deep dark filmmaker Michael Haneke (The Piano Teacher) won best director at Cannes for this French-language mystery about the revelations that emerge after a TV personality (Daniel Auteuil) and his wife (Juliette Binoche) start receiving strange videos at their tony Paris home. ”The thing I was keen on was exploring guilt,” says Binoche. ”How do we deal with guilt, with hidden secrets in a couple and in oneself?”

Specifically, the movie addresses lingering guilt regarding France’s African colonialist past. But Binoche has no fears that such subject matter won’t translate Stateside. ”The theme is absolutely essential nowadays, for what is happening in the world,” she says. ”America has been involved in colonialism recently. This film reflects what we all have and sometimes don’t want to address.”
