I know how you are. You’re making plans for the weekend – maybe a little holiday shopping, dinner with family or friends, wrap it up with Grey’s Anatomy – and you’re not terribly concerned with a pending visit from your old pal Oscar. But you know what? He’s going to be here in less than three months. So unless you want a repeat of last year’s Oscar Pool Bloodbath – did you really think Catalina Sandino Moreno was gonna take home a statuette for Maria Full of Grace? – it’s time you got serious, playas. Here’s some suggested activities: Don’t say I didn’t warn you when March 5, 2006, rolls around.
-Brokeback Mountain and Transamerica, both of which are scoring scads of early Academy Award buzz, both open in limited release this weekend, but if you don’t happen to live in an area where neither is playing, there’s always Walk the Line, Jarhead, Rent, or Syriana, all of which are in the running, too. As for In The Mix, um, maybe not so much.
-If you’re surfing the ‘Net this weekend, check out Movie City News’ lists of top 10 contenders for nominations in every major category; they’re updated regularly to reflect current buzz, reviews, and pre-Oscar awards tallies. Fun!
-Not everyone has the desire to leave the house on cold winter weekends. (It’s called hibernation. You should definitely try it before the year’s out.) I bet, though, that no matter where you live, conditions aren’t quite as frigid as the ones on display in March of the Penguins, which, coincidentally, looks like a likely friend of Oscar.
-So what are Academy Award winners Barbra Streisand and Eminem doing this weekend? Why, they both have concert specials airing on TV: Babs’ 40th anniversary telecast of My Name Is Barbra (Sunday night on PBS, check local listings) and Em’s Eminem Live From New York City (Saturday, 9-10:15 p.m. EDT, Showtime).
Brush up, my little experts. The Day of the Golden Guy is nigh.
