VANITY FAIR GALA
The Vanity Fair fete was the stop for the most glittering of the glitterati. Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, and big winners Reese Witherspoon and Philip Seymour Hoffman were among the guests nibbling on brownies in the ruby-colored dining room. ”I think everyone that won deserved it,” said Madonna, who saw only bits of the show because ”my kids kept calling me.” While the Material Mom caught up with old friends John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn kept a low profile with Old School pal Will Ferrell. After the Dakota Fanning lollipops were consumed, there was nowhere to go but home. ”I feel like I’ve eaten 12 pounds of chocolate,” said Capote director Bennett Miller. ”I’m done.”
THE GOVERNORS BALL
L.A., KODAK THEATRE
Forget Wolfgang Puck’s feast. The tastiest topic of the post-ceremony bash was the Best Picture upset. ”Everybody was shocked,” said Capote screenwriter Dan Futterman. ”It was great to see a big surprise.” Among the celebs circling under the glowing chandeliers were Heath Ledger, winners George Clooney and Ang Lee, and Chris ”Ludacris” Bridges, who hung with presenter Queen Latifah. By the time host Jon Stewart arrived, he was a bundle of relieved nerves. ”I was happy to get through it without cursing or embarrassing myself,” he said. Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman knew how to get the party started: He was the lone bold-faced name spotted on the dance floor.
EW VIEWING PARTY
NEW YORK CITY, ELAINE’S
Who says west is always best? Gothamites Marcia Gay Harden, William Baldwin, Law & Order: SVU’s Chris Meloni, Chris Noth, Alan Cumming, and others downed Good Night, and Good Luck gimlets and Crash cosmos as they cheered on their Angeleno compatriots. In particular, George Clooney’s ”out of touch” speech resonated with the the spians. ”Movies have done things before the rest of the world was ready for them, so I love that he said that,” noted former Oscar winner Harden, who, along with Baldwin, took a red-eye flight from L.A. after attending the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday. ”And Elaine throws the best party — it’s intimate and wonderful, plus the history of Capote is here.”
ELTON JOHN’S FAMOUS FETE
L.A., PACIFIC DESIGN CENTER
A mix of music, TV, and movie industry moguls — like Prince, Lindsay Lohan, Tim Allen, Jenna Elfman, Ben Stiller, and Sharon Stone — were seen enjoying the sights and sounds of John’s after-party. The guests, who chowed down on mac and cheese and pumpkin ravioli, presumably all made it through the doors before fire marshals briefly closed the venue due to overcrowding. Once inside, though, the crowding continued as a line formed to snatch one of the heavily stocked celeb gift bags. But at least everyone agreed on the evening’s highlight: an amazing performance from R&B artist John Legend, which was capped by a killer duet of ”Rocket Man” with the party’s bespectacled host.
