There was this rumor floating around a while ago about Brittany Murphy. Story goes: In an effort to convince producers to cast her in a Janis Joplin biopic, she made a demo of herself singing some Big Brother and the Holding Company hits. Though that film never materialized, we heard the tapes were incredible.
A few bootlegs were passed around, but then suddenly vanished, around the time that Paramount announced that Renée Zellweger would star in Piece of My Heart, another Joplin biopic. To complicate things further, Penelope Spheeris went forward with a competing Joplin biopic called The Gospel According to Janis starring Pink. It’s unclear how Murphy fit into this picture, but, needless to say, we never heard the tapes. (Nor have we seen the movies as of yet.)
But knowing about the buzzy tapes means we weren’t that surprised when we heard “Faster Kill Pussycat,” in which Murphy’s raspy vocals are featured over a slow-grind techno track by DJ Paul Oakenfold. It probably won’t storm the Billboard charts any time soon, but it makes us optimistic for the day when we have to say “Brittany Murphy’s new album” without snickering – the way we do with other talented actors.
