Begin to Hope

Genre: Rock, Pop; Lead Performer: Regina Spektor; Producer (group): Sire

The Russian-born, Bronx-raised chanteuse scoots closer to the mainstream on Begin to Hope the follow-up to her 2005 art-rock album, Soviet Kitsch. Producer David Kahne (the Strokes, Sugar Ray) streamlines the arrangements and reins in Regina Spektor’s voice, especially on ”Fidelity” and ”Better”; they’re as smooth and snazzy as anything from fellow singer-songwriter-pianist Norah Jones. Spektor still has her fun, unleashing the harder-rocking, Kitsch-y ”Apres Moi” and ”That Time.” She displays a range fans old and new will find intoxicating.
