Getting Somewhere

Genre: Rock, Country; Lead Performer: Allison Moorer; Producer (group): Sugar Hill

Allison Moorer began as a Nashville country singer, but like sister Shelby Lynne, soon jumped ship, exploring folk, gospel, and soul. Getting Somewhere, her first truly self-penned set amps up the twang-rock of her 2004 disc, The Duel, with high-mileage new hubby Steve Earle producing. The match is by no means perfect: Moorer’s understated voice doesn’t always rise to the arrangements. But when it does, particularly on the slower tracks where she can stretch out a bit (”New Year’s Day”), she sounds stronger and more fearless than ever.
