We gave it an A-

Moral Disorder, Margaret Atwood’s first story collection in 15 years, is like a novel, once removed. Hopscotching through eight decades, the 11 tales follow Nell from the school-girl crafting her headless-horseman Halloween costume, to the loner college graduate thinking of herself as an ”itinerant brain,” to the elderly woman who, living in a world she no longer understands, has learned to ”absorb…the calories of bad news” that life feeds her. Stories like ”White Horse,” which touchingly juxtaposes Nell’s sister’s mental illness with her budding friendship with a vivacious mare, prove Atwood is still a master of the compelling, peculiar portrait of human behavior.
