With so many ”done wrong” diatribes to her name, it seems Monica can’t brush her teeth without being let down by a slippery boyfriend. At the ripe old age of 26, the singer hints at mature contentment on her fourth CD — as on the cozy Curtis Mayfield-sampling ”A Dozen Roses (You Remind Me)” — while retaining some angry edge. ”Sideline Ho,” meanwhile, scores with tough-talking venom. But she falters when between those two states, on middling ballads like ”My Everything.” Still, The Makings of Me is a solid addition to her quietly consistent career.
