Saw III

Genre: Horror; Starring: Angus MacFadyen, Tobin Bell, Dina Meyer; Director: Darren Bousman; Author: James Wan; Release Date Wide: 10/27/2006; Runtime (in minutes): 107; MPAA Rating: R; Distributor: Lions Gate Films

The Saw films are a cut — or should that be a slash? — above most frightfests in terms of both plotting and philosophical ruminations. But at times movie No. 3 in the series seems to forget that its primary raison d’être is to scare the pants off people. Even the goriest sequence — in which a kidnapped doctor must perform brain surgery on the franchise’s chief villain, Jigsaw — is more for fans of ER and/or power tools than frights.
EXTRAS Deleted scenes, docs, and three amiable filmmakers’ commentaries (”That transition was Scorsese-worthy!”).
