In the Pit

Genre: Documentary; Director: Juan Carlos Rulfo; Release Date Limited: 02/02/2007; Runtime (in minutes): 84; MPAA Rating: Unrated; Distributor: Kino International

With countless Mexican workers laboring to build a massive freeway in Mexico City, filmmaker Juan Carlos Rulfo patiently focuses on a handful of the souls who might otherwise be forgotten among the working anonymous in In the Pit. The soft-spoken, impressionistic documentary (with a hypnotic score built from the sounds of construction) climaxes with a six-minute helicopter-cam view of the colossal structure to which these somebodies have been dedicating their sweat, and sometimes their very lives. And the experience of grasping the scale of something so big, built by so many so small, is awe inspiring. B+
