Madonna may affect a posh speaking voice and taste for British beer, but Belinda Carlisle is a far more rabid advocate of her adopted Euro homeland. On Voila, she applies a fluency in French and her infamous vibrato to beloved Gallic evergreens, some obvious (”La Vie en Rose”), others more obscure (Brigitte Bardot’s ”Contact”). It’s never a chore to hear these lovely songs, but Madame Carlisle, while credible in accent and intonation, lacks the world-weariness to give this collection that certain je ne sais quoi. B
