Though William H. Daniels rightly won an Oscar for his dazzling cinematography, the rest of this Manhattan-set neo-noir (one of the earliest Hollywood films to experiment with on-location shooting) doesn’t hold up. The voice-over narration is particularly grating, and Fitzgerald and Taylor are, respectively, too hammy and too wooden as cops investigating a model’s murder.
