On her sophomore outing, American Idol survivor — and current Celebrity Fit Club contestant — Kimberley Locke is unshackled by the constraints of genre. Based on a True Story shows her as much at home with a cathartic country ballad (”Change”) as she is with a lurching rocker (”Any Which Way”), a reverent cover of a chestnut (”Band of Gold”), or an Oprah-ready anthem of gratitude (”Everyday Angels”). But stylistic variety means little if it isn’t accompanied by memorable performances, and K. Lo fails to inject personality into these songs. C
