My Brother

Genre: Drama; Starring: Tatum O'Neal, Vanessa Williams; Runtime (in minutes): 90; MPAA Rating: PG-13

If My Brother feels like an Afterschool Special, it’s probably because director Anthony Lover helmed one in 1979 about a teenage alcoholic. Here, a stand-up comic (Nashawn Kearse) struggles to support his developmentally disabled brother (Christopher Scott) by taking a shady job from some Middle Eastern men. When that mildly interesting premise is abandoned in favor of flashbacks to the boys’ dying mother (Vanessa Williams) and her generic life lessons (”Fear makes you weak!”), the movie veers into shameless tearjerker territory. EXTRAS None. C+
