Yo Soy Boricua, Pa' Que Tu Lo Sepas

Genre: Documentary; Director: Rosie Perez; Runtime (in minutes): 85; MPAA Rating: Unrated

Actress/first-time director Rosie Perez tries to pack Puerto Rico’s entire history into one documentary (Yo Soy Boricua, Pa’ Que Tu Lo Sepas!). And while the results occasionally feel rushed — the coerced sterilization of poor women gets less than three minutes of screen time — there are signs of life everywhere: boisterous scenes of New York City’s Puerto Rican Day parade, a quickie primer on Spanglish. The most powerful witness remains Perez herself, as she proudly introduces her army-vet father and recalls her childhood in barrio Brooklyn. EXTRAS None. B
