We gave it a B

Jonathan Tropper’s dramedy follows Doug Parker, a 29-year-old widower still pining after his deceased wife and reluctantly reentering the dating world. A mixture of mourning and mockery, How to Talk to a Widower proves most fun (and surprisingly moving) when exploring Doug’s sarcastic inner thoughts: After agreeing to babysit for a potential love interest, Doug thinks, ”She’s only got basic cable, which she was wise not to disclose earlier because it may very well have been a deal-breaker.” Unfortunately, though, a good chunk of the book follows Doug’s unremarkable and grating dysfunctional family, plus some poorly drawn female characters.
