Though some of James Lee Burke’s recent thrillers have been uneven, The Tin Roof Blowdown is not only a top-notch mystery but a moving post-Katrina tribute to his beloved New Orleans. New Iberia cop Dave Robicheaux watches uneasily as the ”churning white vortex of wind and water so great in magnitude that only a satellite photograph can do it justice” spins closer to Louisiana. After the storm hits, he’s assigned to a shooting and a looting, exploring their convergence while picking his way through the detritus of his home. Burke’s elegy is so raw, painful, and eloquent, it’s almost hard to concentrate on the case. A
