Exclusive: A sneak peek at the VMAs setup

Party suites, a hopping bar, and thousands of lightbulbs: We take you through the details of the awards show's Vegas venue

This year, the MTV Video Music Awards are going for a glitzy party vibe — so what better city to host than Las Vegas? For the first time, Sin City (specifically, the Palms Casino Resort) will welcome the network’s flagship event — but that’s not the only thing that’s different. For the Sept. 9 ceremony, producers chose to stray from the traditional auditorium setup, planning a tighter, two-hour show with Timbaland as ”maestro,” two alternating stages, performances in hotel suites and clubs, and collaborations that get back to what MTV is supposed to be about — the music. ”We wanted to go intimate, very much focused on talent and celebrating the year in music, but then also injecting a fun party vibe by going around to these different suites’ parties,” says executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic. LED projection screens, bars that double as walkways, and an MTV logo lit with 1,500 light bulbs are just some of the details of this year’s setup.
