A VMA fashion special

A VMA fashion special -- From Rihanna and Megan Fox to Sarah Silverman and Nelly Furtado, a lot of ladies came to Vegas in matching pairs

The competition spilled off the casino floor and onto the red carpet when MTV’s Video Music Awards invaded Las Vegas on Sept. 9. The ladies of the night gambled on glittering gowns, hot pink frocks, tight sheaths, and, um, jumpsuits — yet when it came time to show, many turned up as matching pairs. We sort the aces from the duds.

Rihanna and Megan Fox
Fuchsia must have been a lucky color for Rihanna (or maybe it was the good karma that comes with not lip-synching?). Along with getting our top style honors, she took home two Moonmen for ”Umbrella.” Also revving up the girly hue was Transformers’ Fox, who said, ”It’s the perfect color” — must be, she wore the same shade to MTV’s Movie Awards in June.

Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé
These former costars brought the gold — but while Hudson’s trés chic frock nodded to her upcoming role in the Sex and the City flick, Beyoncé toga-like turn hinted at a whole lotta double-sided tape.

Lauren Caitlin Upton and Tara Conner
Amateur geographer Miss South Carolina Teen USA and former Miss USA party girl tried classing it up with beige. Only problem: They looked so alike we can’t tell them apart.

Sarah Silverman and Nelly Furtado
If they wanted to be taken more seriously suited up, it didn’t work: Furtado lost to Fergie and not-so-funny girl Silverman bombed. Maybe it’s time to show some leg.

Nicole Scherzinger and Melanie Brown
Fleeing Pussycats and Spices, these mostly solo acts surprised: Mel for her sleek stunner, Nicole for her pretty-party-in-the-front, bizarre-biz-in-the-back getup.
