On this four-disc look at Bay Area hippie weirdness, worn-out Joplin, Santana, and Jefferson Airplane tunes make an obligatory appearance (”White Rabbit” again?). But the bulk of Love Is the Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970 ranges from the obscure (the Charlatans) to the really obscure (Frumious Bandersnatch). Unfamiliar doesn’t always mean interesting, however. Though some are worth hearing — Country Weather’s ”Fly to New York,” Kak’s ”Lemonaide Kid” — many have been forgotten for a reason. B-
