Growing up in the ’70s, I learned what I thought were two hard and fast laws of fashion: Don’t mix plaids with stripes. And never mix multiple plaids in one outfit. And while in recent years I’ve changed my tune and worn such verboten combinations myself, I’ve never seen these rules broken with as much panache as on last night’s episode of Ugly Betty, where Marc (the fantastic Michael Urie, left) rocked a plaid jacket, plaid shirt, and plaid tie — along with a striped pant! — in what’s undoubtedly the fall TV season’s greatest fashion triumph. The way his orange pocket hankie tied the whole look together was, as Marc might say himself, “a-mah-zing!”

Oh, and speaking of Ugly (not ugly) trends, I’m pretty sure the clingy purple dress (the one with the gathered front seam and plunging back) that Amanda (Becki Newton, right) had on was the same exact one that Natalie Kimpton (Tamara Feldman) wore to Patrick Darling’s Senate campaign launch on Wednesday’s Dirty Sexy Money. Fashionistas, discuss! And for those of you reading this and thinking, “Ugh, too gay,” you might want to skip the items I’m writing about Madonna, Kylie, and Beyoncé later this morning. Oh, snap!
