All or Nothing

Genre: Fiction; Author: Preston L. Allen; Publisher: Akashic

A school-bus driver, identified only as P, is on the brink of overcoming a gambling addiction. Then he lands a six-figure slots jackpot, but loses his family, self-respect, and moral compass in the bargain. Knee deep in riches, P must get his life in order while trying — unsuccessfully — to avoid the pull of the casino. Though Preston L. Allen traces the harrowing tribulations of dependency in All or Nothing, he fails to generate much sympathy for his unlikable protagonist who, among other things, takes money from his poor, dying mother. There are some stirring moments in the final chapters, but it’s hardly worth the gamble. C+
