The Heroines

Genre: Fiction; Author: Eileen Favorite; Publisher: Scribner

A mother-daughter team run a B&B that secretly operates as a halfway home for tragic literary protagonists in The Heroines. It’s an intriguing premise. Eileen Favorite explores what Emma Bovary, Blanche DuBois, et al. do when they’re not involved in their own narratives — as well as the lengths the caretakers go to to avoid tampering with their stories, even at a cost to their own relationships. Alas, it’s this lack of interference that also cripples the book. The heroines are detached, appearing as inconsolable distractions rather than informing the novel’s potentially rich issues of feminism and literature’s influence on the real world. B-
