”An Affair to Remember”’s weepy scenes

39 MINS. After they meet cute on a cruise, playboy Nickie Ferrante (Grant), who’s engaged to an American heiress, takes former chanteuse Terry McKay (Kerr) to visit his grandma, Janou, on the French Riviera. The ladies sing the title song as a smitten Nickie looks on.

53 MINS. Before the boat docks in the Big Apple, the star-crossed pair share a teary final evening; at dawn, they vow to reunite in six months on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building: ”The nearest thing to heaven we have in New York,” gushes Terry.

79 MINS. Half a year later, Nickie has dumped his fiancée and made his own way as an artist. While rushing to their rendezvous, Terry is hit by a car and paralyzed. Nickie waits, heartbroken, atop the Empire State Building as ambulance sirens blare below.

103 MINS. Months later, a bitter Nickie arrives at Terry’s apartment — where she’s confined to the sofa — with a shawl from his now-dead granny. After scolding her for standing him up, he learns her secret. ”If you can paint, I can walk,” she bawls. By this point you’ll be bawling too.
