(FROM VARIETY) ? Hilary Swank is starring as Amelia Earhart in Amelia, a biopic about the pioneering aviator that Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) is directing from a script by Ron Bass (Entrapment). Earhart became the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross medal after she flew across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928. She went missing over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 during a solo trans-global flight attempt and was declared dead in 1939. Swank will play Earhart during the trans-Atlantic flight days. Socialite Amy Guest was originally set up to make the daring nonstop flight across, but when she was eventually talked out of trying to become the first woman to make the trip, the idea got pitched to Earhart, who agreed, and the event became a major media spectacle. Production is set to start in April. Swank just starred in P.S., I Love You. Nair became available to direct Earhart after Warner Bros. postponed Shantaram, which stars Johnny Depp. (Variety)
