The Must List: Shearwater's flights of fancy

Shearwater_lShearwater (pictured), an indie rock band from Austin, Texas, has a somewhat kooky aesthetic — frontman Jonathan Meiburg writes intelligent, cryptic songs about nature, has a Masters in geology, and obsesses over birds like most rock stars obsess over women. Yet his music is hardly dull — it boasts a quiet ferocity belied by gorgeous, soaring melodies. Rook, Shearwater’s new album, is out next Tuesday on Matador, but check out some of their songs now, or this totally awesome video set to their song “Turn Your Transmitters Off.” It seems to have nothing to do with the music in question, but who doesn’t like legs?
