Telex From Cuba

Genre: Fiction; Author: Rachel Kushner; Publisher: Scribner

In her first work of fiction, longtime journalist Rachel Kushner brings both a reporter’s meticulous research and a novelist’s flair for the fantastical to her examination of Cuba before the revolution. Through the interwoven narratives of several protagonists (among them, two children of the white ruling class and a burlesque dancer involved with the resistance movement), she illuminates both the natural beauty and savage inequities of an island constantly on the cusp of lawlessness. The multitude of voices occasionally clutters and slows the narrative, but as a snapshot from a long-gone era, Telex From Cuba still fascinates. B+
