How the West Was Won

Genre: Western, Romance; Starring: Henry Fonda, Debbie Reynolds, Jimmy Stewart, Carroll Baker, Gregory Peck; Director: John Ford, Henry Hathaway; Runtime (in minutes): 164; MPAA Rating: G; Distributor: MGM

Three directors (John Ford, Henry Hathaway, George Marshall)! A three-lens Cinerama camera! Three concurrently running projectors! Okay, as an omnibus drama, How the West Was Won wasn’t triply great. But despite wooden performances, the final feature filmed in true Cinerama is great fun and holds a wiiiiiide spot in cineasts’ hearts. It always looked goofy on video, with blurry ”join lines” trifurcating the screen, but those distractions have been digitally erased in this three-disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition. The buffalo stampede, rapids run, and train robbery sequences are seamless at last. A-
