Ratings: 'Survivor' up, Christmas in

Sunday’s Survivor: Gabon finale wrapped up the show’s 17th (!) season with 14.9 million
viewers, 2 million more than the last finale in Micronesia. But the big
victory of the evening went to NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the Giants and the Cowboys, with 20.5 million viewers. Out of the game this week: ABC, which ran a showing of The Santa Clause (8.9 million) and a rerun of Desperate Housewives (5.8 million).

The rest of the weekend showed the holiday season is officially upon us — or at least upon our TVs. The classic Frosty the Snowman — not a slew of crime shows — helped win Friday night for CBS with 7.7 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen data. Animated special The Flight Before Christmas kept the network’s pre-holiday cheer coming with 7.6 million, and, well, a rerun of Numb3rs (7.4 million) didn’t do too badly either. Dateline (7.1 million) kept NBC in the 10 p.m. game, while ABC’s 20/20 (5.7 million) came in a distant third. On Saturday, CBS’ repeat of Eleventh Hour (3.8 million) fell victim to Cops, which collared 5 million viewers at 8 p.m. and 5.4 million at 8:30 p.m. and helped Fox win the night. But CBS’ two hours of 48 Hours Mystery (5.6 million) bested ABC’s movie, Surviving Christmas (4.9 million).
