'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' leads box office

Kevin James’ latest broad comedy, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, roared out of the gate on Friday, grossing $9.8 million to lead the box office on the first day of this holiday weekend. Surprisingly, the film is on pace to gross upwards of $30 mil for the three-day frame. Meanwhile, the Notorious B.I.G. biopic, Notorious, was a strong No. 2 on its opening day, banking $8.3 mil – a total that tied it with the weekend’s presumptive favorite, My Bloody Valentine 3D. The other big new release, Hotel for Dogs, was No. 5, with $4.4 mil, but its ranking should rise over the weekend, when kids are out of school. Friday’s totals are below, and you can come back here tomorrow for a full weekend recap in the Box Office Report.

1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop – $9.8 mil
2. Notorious – $8.3 mil
3. My Bloody Valentine 3D – $8.3 mil
4. Gran Torino – $6.3 mil
5. Hotel for Dogs – $4.4 mil
