Anna Nicole Smith, the opera: Maybe not as crazy as it sounds

Annanicolesmith_l

Annanicolesmith_lSo yesterday, The Guardian reported that London’s Royal Opera House is planning a 2011 production based on the life of Anna Nicole Smith. Richard Thomas, co-creator of Jerry Springer the Opera, is expected to create the libretto while Mark-Anthony Turnage writes the story of the young Texas girl who became a Playboy playmate, a reality star, and then a symbol of tragic excess after her death in 2007.  Elaine Padmore, the director of Covent Garden, where the opera will be staged, said, “It is a very sad story – a larger-than-life American story, as was Puccini’s Girl of the Golden West. It will be a slice of our times – of America in the pre-Obama days.” It’s shrewd of her to compare Smith to a Puccini heroine, but she may have a point: Was there any celebrity more operatic than Anna Nicole Smith? What do you think PopWatchers: Genius? Totally exploitative? Both? And what other celebrity sagas would make for great opera?
