In a night when such mega-watt stars like Marisa Tomei and Matthew McConaughey visited Jimmy Kimmel, you wouldn’t necessarily expect the up-and-coming comedian Demetri Martin to steal the show. But steal the show he did. Martin – looking quite dapper in what he said was only one of two suits he owns – was charming, self-deprecating, and above all, hilarious, especially when telling an anecdote about how he bombed so badly at a corporate comedy gig he literally heard crickets. The interview got me psyched to check out his new sketch-comedy show on Comedy Central, Important Things With Demetri Martin, which seems to be a runaway success in the ratings.
Elsewhere, Kimmel first invited Tomei to the stage, and she looked absolutely stunning in her short (and rather tight) white dress. Seriously, how great is Tomei? You need only watch this clip of Rourke’sacceptance speech at the BAFTA Awards to see how gracefully deals withpotentially awkward situations (right around the 1:40 mark). Butboy, did she deserve a better interview than Kimmel gave herlast night. Kimmelmostly just talked at her, explaining how the two grew up in adjoiningBrooklyn neighborhoods. But Tomei laughed andsmiled and was as radiant as ever, fielding questions about if she really did chug that beer in the movie (she didn’t, it was water) and whether she’s getting hit on by wrestlers.
Finally, McConaughey dropped by quickly to peddle his j.k. living t-shirts (stands for just keep livin’). Yes. ‘Nuff said.
Did anyone else catch Kimmel last night? And if so, were you alsodisappointed by how he monopolized the Tomei interview with anecdotes aboutBoboli pizza? And who else is jazzed about Demetri Martin and his newsketch-comedy show?
