A master class in capital-A Acting. Streep and Hoffman lock horns as the ramrod-stiff Sister Aloysius and the progressive (and possibly flawed) Father Flynn. Adapted from a Pulitzer-winning play, Doubt simmers with suspicion, then comes to ?a messy boil when Sister Aloysius points her pruny finger at the priest, accusing him of inappropriate behavior with a ?12-year-old altar boy. It’s easy to see why Oscar came calling for both stars. Fellow nominees Amy Adams (as a naive young nun) and Viola Davis (as the boy’s hear-no-evil mother) cut deep in smaller roles. If there’s a nit to pick, it’s with writer-director John Patrick Shanley’s heavy-handed metaphors (apocalyptic windstorms, lightbulbs that go out on cue). ? But that’s hardly a mortal sin. Plus, Shanley acquits himself with a riveting, insidery commentary on the EXTRAS. A?
