Guantanamo: 'So calm and beautiful,' Miss Universe says

Dayanamendoza_lMiss Universe, Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, has raised eyebrows with a post she wrote on her blog last Friday about a trip to Guantanamo Bay, the Associated Press reports. Mendoza, 22, had visited the infamous detention center for accused terrorists as part of a USO trip with Miss USA, Crystle Stewart. In her post about the trip, Mendoza described the terrain around the US naval base. “The water in Guantanamo Bay is sooooo beautiful!” she wrote. “It was unbelievable … I didn’t want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.” The post was taken down from her blog quickly, according to the AP, but a moment too late. The New York Times had already written about it on its website. The President of the Miss Universe organization, Paula Shugart, put a post on Mendoza’s blog saying that Mendoza’s comments “were in reference to the hospitality she received while meeting the members of the US military and their families who are stationed in Guantanamo.”
