'10 Things I Hate About You': Can ABC Family do the fan favorite justice?

10thingsihate_dlI’ve always had a love-hate relationship with ABC Family. While it’s comforting to know where I can find my next Gilmore Girls fix, to me, the channel’s original content has always been rather sub-par. Greek gave me a shining light of hope that maybe the station was growing into something wittier and more relevant to pop culture, and then they hit me with a triple serving of wrong with Au Pair 3: Adventure in Paradise. So now that I know that ABC Family is turning one of my favorite teen comedies, 10 Things I Hate About You (starring Heath Ledger, pictured), into a series premiering July 7, with a 10-episode first season, I’m a bit scared.

The movie, based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, came out 10 years ago but is just as quippy today. So can ABC Family uphold the film’s edgy humor? I’ve never used the word edgy to describe ABC Family, and I can’t see it bringing the likes of Kat’s black panties or her classic, eye-roll-equipped line “I want you, I need you, oh baby oh baby” to the network. But lets see what we’re working with. Apparently, the TV version of 10 Things I Hate About You has a cast full of former Nickelodeon and Disney actors. Again, not edgy, but keep in mind the movie’s Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) was Alex Mack, after all. Here’s the big bonus: Larry Miller is reprising his role as the overprotective, chastity belt advocating Stratford family patriarch (Go Huskies!). Everything seems to be in line with the movie (they’re even using the same director, Gil Junger), except writer Carter Covington (Greek) made Kat and Bianca new students, and right now I don’t see the name Bogie Lowenstien on the lineup. If that’s true, for shame! I predict the show would struggle without a Bogie Lowenstien.

July’s still a good three months away, and the 10-second promo does nothing for me, but I know I’ll give the show a chance if only to remember how cool the movie was without watching it for the 15th time. It might be surprisingly endearing like Greek, or it might suck. I just hope they go to a high school that looks like a castle and occasionally break into verse in the cafeteria…and add a Bogie Lowenstien. Will you watch, PDubs?
