Ratings: 'American Idol' rules another week

Once again, Fox’s juggernaut American Idol took the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the ratings for the week ending April 5. There was no contest for the Tuesday performance and Wednesday results shows, which drew 24.4 million and 24.3 million viewers, respectively. For the second week in a row, the results show nearly matched the performance episode – just 100,000 viewers separated the two installments. Lady Gaga performed a version of her hit “Poker Face” on the results show, which may have convinced some viewers to tune in to the Wednesday night episode they might normally have skipped.

Elsewhere, the two-hour series finale of NBC’s ER landed the show in the Top 20 for the first time in recent memory; the medical drama rolled in at No. 6 with 16.4 million viewers. (A one-hour retrospective drew 10.6 million viewers, which was good enough for a No. 19 finish for the week.) ER, which ran for 15 seasons, garnered the highest-rated series-ender for a drama since Murder, She Wrote in 1996. Despite the fact that ER didn’t end its run at the top of the ratings heap (shows rarely do), it’s important to realize what an impact it had on television: ER was the top-rated TV drama for seven seasons (from 1994-2001) until CBS’ CSI hit its stride. Impressive!

The week featured two other Top 20 anomalies. The 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards show up at No. 7 with 14.8 million viewers, which was good enough to be that ceremony’s most-watched show since 1999. Also, one semifinal game of the NCAA basketball tournament – in which UNC beat Villanova – came in at No. 10 with 14.5 million viewers. (The other semifinal, between the University of Connecticut and Michigan State, aired before primetime.) The national championship game, which was telecast last night and will be included in next week’s weekly ratings report, drew 16.3 million viewers, according to fast overnight ratings. In case you didn’t know: UNC beat Michigan State for the national title.

The rest of the week was rather standard. ABC’s two installments of Dancing With the Stars did well. So did CBS’s procedurals, Survivor, and Monday night comedies, and Fox’s House and 24. The full Top 20 is after the jump.
