The White Stripes have always been good at keeping us guessing. Their initial fame was shrouded in “What the frak are they? Brother and sister? Husband and wife?” mystery. Now we’ve just been left wondering, what’s next for the duo?

The last few years, Jack White’s main focus has been on his various side projects, including The Raconteurs and new supergroup The Dead Weather. Meanwhile, Meg White just got engaged to Jackson Smith (yep, Fred and Patti’s son.) In an interview with, Jack confirmed that a new White Stripes album “won’t be too far off. Maybe next year.” Jack also dished that he and Meg had started tinkering around with new tracks before their Feb. 20 gig on Conan‘s finale episode, their last live performance to date.

While the Stripes’ road has always been a bit of a bumpy one (Meg’s struggles with anxiety issues put the brakes on their last tour), Jack holds no grudges: “We just needed to stop for a while. When it comes down to yourhealth. It’s hard; people don’t really understand. They think you goup on stage and you’re having a blast, like you’re partying or somes—. That’s not the case. It’s hard work to go on tour.” What do you think, Music Mixers? Are you excited to hear new material from White Stripes? Or has the love since worn off?
