Kiefer Sutherland's latest legal woes -- The ''24'' star was charged with third-degree assault after allegedly headbutting fashion designer Jack McCollough for bumping into Brooke Shields

Exactly what transpired during a scuffle involving Kiefer Sutherland and fashion designer Jack McCollough at an NYC party on May 5 is still murky more than a week later. Sutherland was charged with third-degree assault after allegedly head-butting McCollough for bumping fellow guest Brooke Shields. Shortly afterward, McCollough’s rep claimed he was a ”victim of an…unprovoked assault,” while Sutherland’s lawyer said the actor was ”neither the instigator nor a wrongdoer.” On May 11, Shields’ lawyer issued this statement: ”While at the party she was bumped into by Jack McCollough, and Kiefer Sutherland became concerned. Kiefer has always been a gentleman in her company.”

What does all this mean for Sutherland? The star of Fox’s hit show 24 remains on probation after a DUI conviction in 2007 for which he spent 48 days in jail. L.A. authorities have yet to say whether the new incident violates his probation, and they seem intent on being tight-lipped until after his June 22 court date in NYC. While any extended jail time might affect 24’s production, sources say that as of now the show is on track to begin filming season 8 on May 27. At a finale event on May 12, 24 exec producer Howard Gordon confirmed to EW that his star would be back. Sutherland, however, was cryptic: ”I can’t really tell you in what context I’ll be involved with the show — for a variety of reasons.”
